The paratympanic organ (PTO) in the middle ear of birds, generally referred to as their all-natural barometer, apparently evolved from the sense organs of incredibly ancient fish, investigators from the University of Cambridge established in a new study.
The ancient sense organ was originally found in aquatic creatures this kind of as sharks and sturgeons, the crew explains in a paper published in the most recent concern of the scientific journal Nature Communications.
Scientists argue that the authentic perform of the organ was to detect jaw movements. Later, as the initial animals began strolling on land, a lot of organs that their ancestors had altered perform, or disappeared completely.
&ldquoIt is not clear why the PTO was lost in the other amniote lineages &ndash mammals, turtles, lizards and snakes &ndash but the PTO&rsquos function is probably to have been modified in birds for detecting air strain for the duration of flight,&rdquo the exploration group explains.
